Web Wise: How to Do an Online Search

You can use the Internet to learn more about opportunities for outdoor adventures for you and your family. Suppose you want to find a guide to state or national parks where you can try camping, hiking, river rafting, and other outdoor activities. Being able to search effectively will help you quickly get the information you want. To do so, follow these steps.

  1. Print out this page to use as a guide.
  2. Go to the AOL NetFind Kids Only search engine. A search engine is an online tool that lets you look on the Internet for information you want. You can look for information even if you don't know the address of a website where that information can be found.
  3. Once you get to the AOL NetFind Kids Only Homepage, locate the search window to the left of the word "Find!"
  4. Enter the following words as search terms: "national AND state AND parks AND guide". Then press Return or click "Find!"

Search Tip: The word AND is a special search term. In this case, it tells the search engine to find only those articles that contain the word national, the word state, the word parks, and the word guide. Different search engines have different ways of combining search terms. Most search engines have a page explaining how search terms are combined. If you use a new search engine, look for words like Help or About and click them for information.

  5. Now it's time to choose from your search results -- the list of sites that contain your search terms. Click the hotlink for the "Internet Vacation Guide -- National and State Parks."
  6. Read through the list of parks on the Internet Vacation Guide Homepage. Then click a hotlink for a park that interests you.
  7. Read the text on the page that appears. If you want to learn more about opportunities for specific outdoor activities in the park, click one of the hotlinks in the text.
  8. Return to Web Wise: How to Do an Online Search by clicking the Close button on the browser toolbar.

Now find out how web wise you are. Take a quick check.
