Homegrown Solutions:
Making a Plan to Reduce Garbage at Home

Print out this page and take it home. With your family, make a list of some things you reuse or recycle. Then list some things you throw away. Create a chart like the one below to show your family's waste disposal habits. Figure out if you could reuse or recycle anything that you currently throw away. Then come up with a plan for reducing even more the amount of garbage your family creates. Write down your plan and put it where everyone can see it. Finally, put your pollution solution into action!

Material How We Dispose of It Garbage Reduction Plan
Glass bottles We put them in a large bin. We could put the bins outside for curbside recycling collection.
Plastic bags We throw them away. We could use each bag several times. We could return some plastic grocery bags to the store for recycling.
Vegetable scraps We throw them away. We could make a compost bin in our backyard to turn the scraps into soil for our garden.
