Web Wise: How to Do an Online Search
You can use the Internet to read other fables
from cultures around the world. One way to do this is by using
a Web directory. A Web directory is a tool that helps
you find information on the Internet, much like a phone book
helps you find phone numbers. Let's suppose you want to read
a fable from Africa. To do so, follow these steps:
- Print out this web page to use as a guide.
- Go to the Yahooligans!
Web guide.
- Once you get to the Yahooligans! home
page, you will see a directory for this Web guide. The directory
lists the main categories or topics of the websites that are linked
to the guide. Click the category "School Bell."
- On the School Bell page, you will find a list of
more specific categories. Click "Language Arts."
- On the Language Arts page, click "Folk and
Fairy Tales." On the Folk and Fairy Tales page, click "Mythology
and Folklore."
- Read the list of websites on the Mythology and
Folklore page. Then click the hotlink
"Myths and Fables."
- Now that you have reached the table of contents
for the myths and fables in this website, scroll
down until you find the title "Tortoise and Eagle." Click
the picture of the tortoise next to the title.
- Read "Tortoise and Eagle," a fable from
Central Africa. As you read, take notes about the main characters, the
setting, the problem, the events, and the resolution. Use your notes
to fill in the story map below.
- Think about the lesson Eagle learns. What
is the moral of this fable? Write it here.
