Web Wise: How to Do an Online Search

In order to find information on the Internet, you need to know how to do an online search. Let's suppose you want to learn about the beluga whale. To do so, follow these steps.

  1. Print out this web page to use as a guide.
  2. Go to the Yahooligans! web guide. This web guide helps you find information even if you don't know the address of a website where it can be found.
  3. Once you get to the Yahooligans! home page, you will see a list of categories or topics of the websites that are linked to the index. Click the category Science & Nature.
  4. On the Science and Oddities page, you will find a list of more specific categories. Click Living Things.
  5. On the Living Things page, click Animals.
  6. On the Animals page, click Marine Life.
  7. On the Marine Life page, click Whales@.
  8. On the Whales page, click Toothed Whales.
  9. On the Toothed Whales page, click Beluga Whales.
  10. Now you have reached a list of websites about beluga whales. You can choose to open and read one or all of the sites by clicking their hotlinks. As you read the information in a website, remember to look for the main ideas and supporting details.
  11. Return to Web Wise: How to Do an Online Search by clicking the Close button on the browser toolbar.
